California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Tilden, a sculptor, who lost his hearing and speech at a young age due to scarlet fever, was educated at what would later become the California School for the Deaf (Berkeley), where he later taught.
